Athletic Wear

  • Science shows clothing can release PFAS, phthalates, bisphenols, heavy metals, and microplastics. These toxicants migrate into sweat and absorb through skin. Heat and moisture accelerate this process, which makes athletic wear a particular concern.
  • Laurel recommends athletic wear made from primarily organic cotton. We allow some spandex because stretchy garments require it.
  • Laurel avoids synthetic materials (polyester, nylon), semi-synthetic materials (rayon, modal, viscose, lyocell), and anything marketed as moisture-wicking, antimicrobial, or water-repellent.
  • Tip: Textiles are extremely unregulated -- even if a garment "feels" natural, check the material label carefully.
