Science showsclothing can release PFAS, phthalates, bisphenols, heavy metals, and microplastics. Synthetic fabrics carry higher loads of plastic-derived additives and shed microplastics that act as vectors for these chemicals.
Laurel recommends shorts made from natural fibers such as cotton, linen, denim, and wool. We allow some spandex for stretch, but there are plenty of 100% natural fiber options.
Laurel avoids shorts made from synthetic materials (polyester, nylon) and semi-synthetic materials (rayon, modal, viscose, lyocell).
Tip: Many "board shorts" and "athletic shorts" are 100% polyester -- look for cotton or linen alternatives, especially in warmer weather when you'll sweat more.
